Pizza Academy @ Oscar & Rosies – Nottingham

Yesterday I, and 17 other lovely people, headed down to Oscar & Rosie’s to take part in their pizza academy. Organised by Jess Berry from Jess Who and the lovely people at Bumble Bizz, we took part in a workshop aimed to show us how to make pizza properly. Famous for their METRE long pizza, I just knew this would be good.

Oscar & Rosie’s

Oscar and Rosie’s started out in the mind of Oliver Hunter, a Lawyer from Nottingham. Having outgrown a little sandwich shop by the train station, then Das Kino, then a Thurland Street premises, they hope to have found their forever home at 8 Stoney Street. And what a premises it is. Huge windows let in lots of light, rustic wooden tables and chairs allow plenty of seating, and front covers of Private Eye and Left Lion adorn the walls. The upstairs reminds me of being in someones living room, comfy, cozy and so relaxed. With a large menu of 14” pizzas and a dedicated vegan menu, it is easy to see why people return time and time again to this gem of a pizzeria. We were housed upstairs for our masterclass, on long benches. Separated into teams of 4, the competition began…

Team ‘Jesus Crust’

Pizza Puns

Myself, Neha from Mostly Food & Travel, Bejal from Be-Lavie, and Amani from AmariCarson.com chose our team name to be ‘Jesus Crust’. We felt we really had to go pizza pun mad… which was good as the other names included ‘pizza the action’ and ‘wanna pizza me’.

Olly then took us through the stages of stretching the dough to create a perfect base and thick crust.

We were then taught how to make pizza!! We each got a ball of dough and with a lot of guidance (and patience) from Olly, were taught how to stretch, flip and throw the dough into a kind of pizza shape!

We were then let loose on the pizza toppings to create a masterpiece! My toppings included a generous slop of tomato sauce, roasted peppers, mushrooms and deliciously salty ham-hock and spicy pepperoni. About their ingredients, Oscar & Rosie’s says

‘No pre-made plastic sauces, no anonymous poor quality meat and no sticky pre-grated cheese. We love to feature award winning, free range and locally sourced produce’

It definitely shines through in their pizza. The ingredients were so fresh, full of flavour and their tomato base was sweet and tangy. I didn’t have the cheese but it was some kind of mozerella and is sliced daily by hand to be as fresh as possible.

After decorating our pizzas with a mountain of toppings, they were whisked away to cook. They were swiftly returned to us, all hot and tasty!

Bumble Bizz Pizza

The room literally silent as everyone started eating their creations. The pizzas were incredible. I know we made them ourselves but I have to give a little credit to Oscar & Rosie’s! Their dough kept the structural integrity despite how some of us loaded our toppings on, the toppings were delicious and clearly very fresh and the expertise from Olly ensured that none of the pizzas has holes in! Unfortunately our team didn’t win, but I didn’t mind (too much). The day was so fun and I will definitely be back soon for Oscar & Rosie’s to make me a pizza!

You can find Oscar & Rosie’s on FACEBOOK, TWITTER and INSTAGRAM.

A huge thanks to Oscar & Rosie’s, Bumble Bizz and Jess for putting on the event!
