Syriana – Birmingham

On a recent trip to Birmingham with some friends, we headed to Syriana Restaurant for dinner. Syriana is located at 1 Constitution Hill, in the heart of the city. We stumbled upon this restaurant on the way to a gig at the o2 Academy. From the outside it didn’t really appeal but having found it via a quick google search, and with  4.5 rating on TripAdvisor, we wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

The restaurant:

The downstairs restaurant looked lovely on entry, but was unfortunately full. We must have looked so disappointed that the waiter ushered upstairs into the shisha lounge and we were able to grab a large round table right at the back. It was separated from the shisha guests which was great as it gave us the opportunity to have a great catch up and not be interrupted.

After ordering beers all round, we perused the menu and decided to just order loads of dishes and share. Syriana serves a mix of Lebanese and Syrian food, mixing traditional dishes with a modern dining experience. The menu is huge and we each chose two or three dishes to share.

What we ate:

We ordered a mix of everything!

From the cold mezze section we ordered:

Hummus Beiruti; a chickpea and red pepper hummus

Wara Enab; Vine leaves filled with tomato, rice, parsley and mint. Slow cooked with fresh lemon and olive oil dressing

Fattoush salad; Healthy: Fresh lettuce, tomato, cucumber, mint, olives and onion salad, topped with toasted bread, olive oil and pomegranate dressing.

All were vegan.

From the hot mezze section we ordered:

Two lots of Falafel; Small minced chickpea patties deep fried and served with garlic sauce

Batata Harra; Potatoes, peppers, coriander and garlic roasted with crushed chilli served with flat bread

Zaatar Man’oush; Freshly baked flat bread topped with thyme and olive oil

Jebne halloumi

All except the Halloumi were vegan.

From the main menu:

Lahm Bil Lkhodar; Tender lamb cubes cooked with a selection of seasonal vegetables, served with rice

Couscous B’Khodar; A fresh selection of vegetables cooked with Moroccan spices served with couscous

Our Experience:

All four of us really enjoyed our mean at Syriana. We finished everything which was no mean feat considering how much we ordered. The only thing we left was a little flatbread. The food was deliciously authentic and came out very quickly and seemed to be prepared at the time of ordering, rather than being pre-prepared. I would definitely return to Syriana and for under £18 per person including drinks you will not be disappointed!
