Chutney – Nottingham

Indian food. I enjoy it, but although I have been to some of the ‘best’ restaurants in Nottingham, I have never felt that I loved it. A good curry isn’t cheap and I love a bargain so when I saw a wowcher deal for Chutney,  I had to do it.

Situated at 41 Friar Lane, right next to the Kitty Cafe, it looks tired and unappealing from the outside. Inside, red leather booths surround the walls and tables are placed nicely spaced apart so that you don’t feel you’re sat on someones lap. It is a little tired inside, and could do with a makeover, but it was quiet, relaxing and clean – exactly what I look for in a place to eat.

You would be forgiven for not knowing this was an Indian restaurant, Movenpick banners are everywhere, and they have an impressive ice cream selection (if you’re not too full for a dessert) as well as shakes and waffles.

The wowcher deal was £12 for 2 people to dine, and included poppadoms, a main meal each and either rice or naan each (doing my research AFTER buying the deal, I realised they do something similar with or without the wowcher code)

We ordered, and the poppadoms came swiftly, hot and with lovely dips. A warming chilli sauce, a mint yoghurt, mango chutney and a cucumber and onion salad.

I chose Persian Pasanda, huge chunks of Tandoori Chicken in a honey, coconut and cream sauce garnished with almonds. This went alongside pilau rice full of cumin seeds and flavour and a garlic naan. The naan was delicious, smothered in chunks of garlic. The curry was sweet and mild, reddish in colour and full of flavour. I was a little concerned it was going to be really creamy but I was assured it wasn’t. It was probably the best curry dish I have ever had, and really suited my tastebuds.

Service was given with a smile, which you don’t usually get with a wowcher deal.

I really, really enjoyed this meal, and you can’t go wrong for £12 for 2 people. The portions were massive and neither of us finished the full meal. We paid £5 for 2 lemonades, so the total meal came up to £17. I will be back time and time again.

If you have driven or walked past and dismissed it because of the exterior, please give it a go – I doubt it will disappoint. It’s also worth noting that on their website they have a 50% offer card. Just mention this on arrival and you get a personal copy of the card. It can’t be used with other promotions, but may still work out cheaper than the deals depending on what you order. It can be used from 5.30 – 11pm every day, including weekends.
